A rainy day in Ustroń: museums, a teddy bear exhibition at the station and cinemas at Równica Mountain Park, then zoo, rope park and sledge run once it clears.
The eight places here differ in character. Four keep you under a roof, one mixes indoor and outdoor activities, and three are outdoor attractions better saved for just after the rain. The split helps a family shape a day in Ustroń when the weather keeps changing.
Which Ustroń museums and exhibitions are under a roof?
Indoors you will find the Ustroń Museum, the Old Homestead, the Vintage Motorcycle Museum and the Good Thoughts Station. Each tells a different story, so two combined make a proper plan for several hours.
The Ustroń Museum at Hutnicza 3 occupies the old head office of the Klemens ironworks, a building of 1800. Its collections concern local ironworking and forging, ethnography and art, and a modest industrial open-air display stands beside the building. The private Old Homestead ethnography museum is at Ogrodowa 1, near the market. It occupies wooden buildings that reuse parts of a cottage from 1768 and presents how people once lived in Cieszyn Silesia.
Fans of motoring can look in at the collection on Kościelna Street, number 21. It brings together vintage motorcycles from the 1930s and 1940s; its keepers run a blog that features, among others, a military Benelli 500 SV from 1940 and a Jawa 350 SV from 1934. At Dworcowa 4, the Good Thoughts Station fills a railway building with plush teddies and bears, downstairs and up. The youngest visitors tend to like it best.
What to do at Równica Mountain Park when it rains
Równica Mountain Park is a recreation complex at the top of Równica with a spherical cinema, a 7D cinema and an inn. You can therefore spend part of your visit under cover, and leave the rest, such as the year-round sledge run, the quads and the slide, for a better moment.
A meal is served in the two-storey Biesiadna Inn on the grounds. There is also a playground. The park's own description mentions Villa Jelenica as well, which offers rooms and conference space.
What to keep for after the rain
Three places operate outdoors: the Forest Park of Surprises, the Rope Park on Równica and the summer sledge run on Czantoria. Skip them in a downpour, and in dry weather use them to round out the day.
The Forest Park of Surprises, opened in 2002, spreads over 15 hectares of the Równica hillside, under ancient beeches. Its paths total 3.5 kilometres, and about thirty species live here, among them bison, red deer and alpacas. Shows of birds of prey and owls in flight are held. The rope park at the top of Równica has high-level routes and a separate children's course open to kids from five, with younger ones accompanied by a parent. On Czantoria, just beneath the top chairlift stop, a gravity-slide track lets sledges roll down under their own weight, with no motor. Ideas for family days in the mountains are collected in the article The Beskids with children.
