Architecture in Ustroń means the wooden St Anne's church, the former Klemens ironworks, a Lutheran church and modernist Zawodzie. Eight places.
Ustroń is a spa town at the foot of the Silesian Beskids, but its buildings also tell of ironworking, Lutherans and the modernism of the 1960s. The overview gathers churches, museums in historic houses and a sanatorium complex to make choosing easier.
Which Ustroń churches should you see?
Four churches of different denominations and eras stand in Ustroń: St Anne in Nierodzim, St Clement, the Exaltation of the Cross in Lipowiec and the Evangelical St James the Greater.
The oldest in town is the wooden St Anne's at Zabytkowa 15, built in 1769 and counted among the Wooden Architecture Trail sites. It has a painting of Anne with Mary and the Child from 1704 and a Rococo pulpit. St Clement's, at Daszyńskiego 15, dates from 1788 and occupies a converted chapel of a Jesuit orphanage, combining late Baroque and Neoclassical features under a square clock tower. The Lipowiec church, on Lipowska Street (no. 135), went up between 1808 and 1810 and holds an altar of 1852. The Lutherans owe their church to a design by Florian Onderka: it was raised in 1835-1838, the tower was added in 1856-1857, and a parish museum operates beside it.
Where to visit museums in historic buildings
Two museums occupy historic buildings: the Ustroń Museum in the one-time headquarters of the Klemens ironworks, and the Old Homestead Regional Museum in a wooden cottage.
The Ustroń Museum at Hutnicza 3 occupies a building of 1800 whose facade bears the arms of the Habsburgs and of Duke Albrecht Kazimierz. It opened in 1986, and its displays cover local iron and forging, ethnography, art, and the medicine of the spa. A small industrial open-air display stands beside it. The Klemens ironworks operated in 1772-1897. The Old Homestead at Ogrodowa 1, near the market square, is a private ethnographic museum in buildings made with parts of a cottage from 1768. It presents the life of the former inhabitants of Cieszyn Silesia.
What stands out in the town itself?
The town of Ustroń lies on the northern slopes of the Silesian Beskids, overlooked by Czantoria Wielka (995 m) and Równica (884 m). The most interesting example of modern building is the Zawodzie complex on the slope of Równica: the Równica sanatorium building together with cone-shaped holiday houses nicknamed pyramids, scattered across the hillside. It was planned from scratch in the spirit of modernism at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, and it has been in the register of monuments since 2023.
