Monuments in Załęże: a Neoclassical palace from 1887, the Neo-Gothic town hall of the former municipality and an abandoned locomotive depot in Katowice.

This is for anyone who wants to see Katowice beyond the centre: the former seat of the Giesche company, the office of a municipality from before its merger with the city, and a railway complex from the early 20th century.

Which monuments in Załęże can you see along Gliwicka Street?

Two buildings stand on Gliwicka Street. The Załęże Palace at number 159 was built in 1886-1887 as the regional headquarters of the Georg von Giesches Erben company. It now houses a private hospital, so it is admired from the outside.

The Załęże Municipal Town Hall at number 102 is a brick building dated 1897, with a clock set in its upper gable and a Neo-Gothic facade. Załęże was a separate municipality until 1924.

What is the locomotive depot on Raciborska Street?

The Katowice Locomotive Depot is an abandoned railway complex with two fan-shaped halls from the turn of the 20th century, registered as a monument in 2021. There are few such sites in Poland. Because it stands abandoned, treat it as a monument to be viewed from outside.

The industrial history of the district is covered in an article on the Charlotte and Cleophas mines and the Baildon steelworks. Besides monuments, the district has churches and monasteries, and the full category is under monuments. The whole district is Załęże.

Frequently asked questions

When was Załęże incorporated into Katowice?

In 1924. Until then it was a separate municipality, and its office was in the brick town hall at Gliwicka 102.
