Bytom for couples: the Silesian Opera, a market with a sleeping lion, squares in the centre, a former pay hall with a dance theatre and a trail to Zabrze.

In Bytom you can put together a calm day for two with culture and history. Most places lie in the centre around the market, and if you want to leave town, a long trail waits.

What to see on a walk through Bytom's centre

Start at the Market Square in Bytom, the town's medieval square, given a rectangular shape by post-war changes. Historic houses stand round it, with a fountain and a sleeping lion at the centre. About 300 metres to the south lies General Sikorski Square, laid out in the 1870s as Kaiserplatz; houses and public buildings surround it, among them the former City Theatre.

North of the market is Plac Grunwaldzki. A small green fills the middle, with benches and a sundial, and a plaque recalls a vanished synagogue. It is a calm place for a pause. In the very centre there is also Kościuszko Square, a former boulevard that changed its name with history; the houses beside it were taken down in the later twentieth century.

Which evening in Bytom: opera or dance theatre?

The grandest choice is the Silesian Opera building on Moniuszki Street. The Neoclassical house of 1901 was built as a concert hall with a city theatre, and since 1945 it has been home to the opera. It has a main stage and a hall named after Adam Didur.

A different character belongs to the old Rozbark colliery pay hall at Wojciecha Kilara 29. This brick building, put up in 1911 and registered as a monument, was taken over by the Rozbark Bytom Dance and Movement Theatre. Combine it with a show. More traces of industry are described in articles on the Szombierki power station and the Pokój steelworks.

Where to go from Bytom for a longer walk

The Kleszczyński trail is a 12-kilometre route, marked in yellow by the PTTK, from Bytom to Zabrze through Miechowice, the Three Ponds Valley and Rokitnica. It runs through green land on the northern edge of the conurbation, so it suits a quiet outing together.

Take note of the Blachówka quarry, a former dolomite mine worked from 1856 until the 1990s. Tourists cannot enter it, so it is more a landscape curiosity than a walking goal. For more greenery inside the conurbation's towns, see the text on nature in the GZM towns. Further date ideas from the whole region sit in the couples section, while the town itself is listed under Bytom attractions.
