Solo in Żory: the Fire Museum, the Municipal Museum, a Gothic church, the defensive walls and the palace in Baranowice - seven places for a day alone.

Żory is a town of medieval origin that burned many times yet kept its walls, a Gothic church and several interesting museums. So there is plenty to see alone, without hurry: museums in the rain, walls and a park in good weather. Other ideas for one person are listed under solo attractions in Silesia, and the remaining sights of Żory under things to do in Żory.

Which museums in Żory to choose on a rainy day?

Two museums of quite different character: the Municipal Museum in a historic villa and the multimedia Fire Museum in a building shaped like a flame. Both let you spend a few hours indoors and go round at your own pace.

The Municipal Museum is housed in the Haering Villa on ul. Muzealna. The institution began work on 28 December 2000. Its displays recount the story of Żory and its surroundings, and a separate section devoted to West African cultures is a rarity for a town of this size. The Fire Museum welcomed its first visitors on 3 December 2014, and the theme is well chosen: over the centuries Żory fell victim to more than thirty fires. The exhibition shows humankind's relationship with fire, and according to the museum a visit takes about an hour. What remains of old Żory?

The Gothic Church of Saints Philip and James, the defensive walls, a modernist Evangelical church and a former synagogue. Together they make a walk through successive eras of the town, from medieval times up to the 1930s.

The Church of Saints Philip and James is the oldest church in Żory, a Gothic three-aisled hall of brick and stone right by the market. The tower is about 54 metres high, and a papal bull of 1193 confirms that a church existed here long before the town developed. After being blown up in 1945 it was rebuilt. Nearby survive fragments of the defensive walls along ul. Ogrodowa and ul. Męczenników Oświęcimskich: brick, Gothic, from the 13th and 14th centuries, among the oldest in Silesia.

The Church of the Saviour on ul. Osińska is a modernist Evangelical Augsburg church from 1929-1931, to plans by Hubert and Henryk Eras, who were brothers. The former synagogue at ul. Kościuszki 3 went up in 1830-1835. The Germans wrecked it during the war, and afterwards the building was turned into the Znicz cinema. It is a building to see from the outside. On Jewish burials in the area, including Żory, read the article Jewish cemeteries in Pszczyna, Żory, Mikołów, Rybnik and Racibórz.

Is there a palace with a park in Żory?

Yes, in Baranowice, now one of the town's districts. The palace in Żory stands at ul. Zamkowa 97; it is Neoclassical, built of brick and on the monuments register. It dates from the 17th century, was rebuilt in the 19th century by Emil von Durant, and was restored in the 1990s after years as a ruin. A park with veteran oaks surrounds it.
