Historic sites in Bytom: Gothic cellars, Plac Akademicki, former hotels on Dworcowa Street and the industrial power house in Bobrek.
Bytom has a few monuments that combine easily into one walk through the centre, and a few more in its districts. The centre is dominated by architecture from Gothic to modernism. Further out wait traces of the industrial past: the steelworks power house, a fire station and a park left by the Tiele-Winckler palace.
What should you see in the centre of Bytom?
In the centre, start with Dworcowa Street and its old hotels, then move on to the Main Post Office and the Gorywoda House cellars. All of these places lie a short distance from each other.
The Sanssouci Hotel, known today as the Bristol, stands at Dworcowa 16 and is the oldest monument on that street. It has a façade of fourteen bays. At number 19 stands the former Reichshof Hotel, an Art Nouveau corner house of 1905 with three gables and the investor's monogram.
The Main Post Office stands at Piekarska 6. It was finished in 1908 in the neo-Renaissance style, and reliefs recalling postal history decorate its clinker-and-sandstone façade. No post office works there now. At Strażacka 8 you go down into the cellars of Gorywoda House. They date from the 1300s, with stone portals ending in a pointed arch and a palm vault that is unusual in secular building.
Where in Bytom can you see Art Nouveau and modernism?
The best examples are Plac Akademicki with buildings from 1905-1927 and a functionalist bathhouse from 1934. Both lie in the town centre.
Plac Akademicki is an oval square about 600 metres from the Market Square, protected as one ensemble with its buildings. The tenement houses blend Art Nouveau, Expressionism and Art Deco, and a fountain of 1947 stands in the middle. The Bathhouse at Parkowa 1 opened in 1934. It has a reinforced-concrete frame, a clinker façade and a tower, and still works as the municipal swimming pool.
Which monuments lie in the districts of Bytom?
In the districts you will see three sites linked with industry and former landowners: a power house in Bobrek, a fire station in Łagiewniki and the remains of a palace in Miechowice.
The Power House of the Bobrek Steelworks at Konstytucji 61 is a former works power station of 1900-1907, neo-Romanesque, of brick, about 108 metres long. The fire station in Łagiewniki at Prosta 4 dates from 1911 and has a wooden training tower. In 1912 a public bathhouse also opened in it.
The Tiele-Winckler Palace at Dzierżonia 30 no longer exists in its original form. After its destruction in 1945 only an annexe and a 19th-century landscape park survived, so the only reason to come is a stroll in the park. Look for other industrial traces in the section on industry and technology, and read about a former power plant in the article on Szombierki. After the monuments, see the churches and monasteries of Bytom, its cemeteries and monuments and parks. For more of the town, go to Bytom.
