Churches in Chorzów: Neo-Gothic churches with tall towers, Modernist buildings of the 1930s and wooden churches in an open-air museum.

In Chorzów you will see Catholic and Lutheran churches from different eras, from sixteenth-century timber to Modernism of the 1960s. Several stand in the very centre, others in the districts of Batory and Chorzów Stary.

Which churches in Chorzów should you see first?

Choose the tall Neo-Gothic churches of brick and sandstone: St Barbara's Church, St Mary Magdalene's Church and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

St Barbara's stands at ulica 3 Maja 18. It is built of hewn sandstone and was blessed in 1852, and its clock tower under a conical roof sets it apart. On a hill in Chorzów Stary, at ulica Bożogrobców 31, rises the church with a 75-metre tower from 1889-1892, the sixth on that spot. In Batory, at ulica Farna 3, is a church with a 73-metre tower from 1898-1901 and holds about five thousand people. For Neo-Romanesque accents go to St Hedwig of Silesia's Church at ulica Wolności 53 and the Basilica of St Joseph, with a clock tower 51 metres high.

Where are the Modernist churches in Chorzów?

Modernism in Chorzów means three churches from different decades: the early 1930s, the late 1930s and the 1960s. Each looks different, and two stand by large housing estates.

St Anthony of Padua's Church at ulica Kopernika 1 was built in 1930-1934 of brick and stone; it has round windows 5.5 metres across, an altar by Bogusław Langman and stained glass by Dezydery Mocznay. The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus at ulica Długa 32 in Batory dates from 1937-1939, and its design was greatly simplified because funds were limited. The most surprising is the Holy Spirit Church at ulica Dąbrowskiego 104 on the Ruch estate: its form recalls the chapel at Ronchamp, and it was listed as a monument in 2022.

Where can you see wooden churches in Chorzów?

Wooden churches stand in two places: on ulica Konopnickiej and in the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park. All of them were moved from other places.

St Lawrence's Church of 1599 stands at ulica Marii Konopnickiej 29, on Góra Wyzwolenia, and belongs to the Wooden Architecture Trail. It was moved from Knurów in 1935-1938. In the ethnographic park, at Parkowa 25, are two more: St Joseph the Worker's Church of 1791, moved from Nieboczowy, and the wooden Evangelical-Augsburg church from Bytom-Bobrek of 1932. You can read about the region's open-air museums in the article Skanseny i zagrody Śląska.

Which Lutheran churches are there in Chorzów?

There are three places: the Neo-Gothic Martin Luther Church, the Church of St Elizabeth within the Lutheran cemetery and a chapel in the parish cemetery.

The Martin Luther Church at ulica Powstańców 13 was built in 1897-1898 and has had monument status since 2009. The Church of St Elizabeth on ulica Katowicka, from 1840-1844, stands within the Lutheran cemetery. The Neo-Gothic cemetery chapel of 1898 lies in the parish cemetery between ulica Drzymały and ulica Cmentarna. More places are listed under things to do in Chorzów, and churches from across the region are in the churches and monasteries category.
