Częstochowa

a horizontal, muddy cave beneath Kamień hill, the former course of the underground Warta

Things to do as a couple in Częstochowa: the philharmonic, the theatre, four squares for a stroll and the Kamień Cave. Seven places to link into a route.

Częstochowa is more than Jasna Góra. The centre has squares with history, two historic culture buildings and an underground corner in the Aniołów district. The text shows what suits an outing for two and what rather does not. More ideas for the city beyond the pilgrimage are in the article Częstochowa without the pilgrimage.

Where to go for an evening of culture in Częstochowa

You can choose between the Częstochowa Philharmonic at Wilsona 16 and the Adam Mickiewicz Theatre at Kilińskiego 15. Both buildings are worth seeing from the outside too.

The philharmonic has a modernist building of 1955-1965, two concert halls and a rehearsal room, and its main hall is praised for its acoustics. The institution organises festivals, symphonic and chamber concerts and cycles for young people. The building stands on the site of the New Synagogue, which was burned down in December 1939. The theatre occupies a brick building of 1928-1931, put up as the Municipal Chamber Theatre to a design by Józef Krupa and Teodor Łapiński. It is the city's only public theatre with a permanent company of actors, and the building is a listed monument.

Which central squares to stroll across

Four squares suit a stroll: Biegański, Daszyński, the Old Market Square and Wieluń Market Square. The first three lie in the city centre and Old Town, the fourth by Jasna Góra.

On Biegański Square, on the pilgrim road to Jasna Góra, stands the town hall of 1828-1836, rebuilt in 1908, late Neoclassical, with a round two-storey tower. Daszyński Square was called the New Market until 1934; six streets meet here, and the fourteenth-century church of St Sigismund stands by the square. It adjoins the Old Market Square, which measures about 100 by 66 metres and is the end of the Eagles' Nests Trail, with historic houses on its eastern and northern sides. Wieluń Market Square is a large open space, once a monastery settlement and a horse market; it looks more like a junction than a square with tenements, and a neo-Gothic church of 1906 watches over it. The history of the neighbouring monastery is told in Jasna Góra as a fortress.

Is the Kamień Cave a good outing for two?

The Kamień Cave lies under the Church of Divine Providence, in the Aniołów district, and counts as a natural curiosity rather than a walk. It is a horizontal cave of low passages, once part of the Warta's hidden underground channel, usually muddy and sometimes flooded. Look in only in suitable footwear and without expecting a romantic evening.
