Churches in Mikołów: the Basilica of St Adalbert with a Haas organ, the town's oldest church, and wooden churches in Borowa Wieś and Paniowy.
Eight churches span seven centuries of building, from thirteenth-century Gothic to a Salvatorian theatre hall turned into a church. Some lie in the centre, the rest in Mokre, Bujaków, Paniowy and Borowa Wieś.
Which church in Mikołów is the oldest?
The oldest is the old Church of St Adalbert and Our Lady of the Snows, a stone church of 1260-1270 north of today's market square. The register of monuments gives its style as Gothic, and late Gothic details suggest a rebuilding at the end of the Middle Ages. Lutherans used it in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Much larger is its successor, the Basilica of St Adalbert of 1843-1861. It is a neo-Romanesque, three-aisled building with two towers, raised because the old church was too small for a parish of almost ten thousand faithful. The title of minor basilica was granted in 2008, and its organ of 1862 counts among the largest historic instruments in Upper Silesia.
Where can you see wooden churches in Mikołów?
Two such churches stand in the districts. The Church of St Nicholas in Borowa Wieś on Gliwicka Street is part of the regional trail of timber architecture, yet it was not built here: in 1937-1939 it was moved from Przyszowice. Its building date cannot be fixed, as sources give 1640 or only the seventeenth century.
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Paniowy, on Staromiejska Street, was begun in 1757. It has one nave, one tower and a late Renaissance altar, and it is listed as a monument.
Which other churches in Mikołów are worth knowing?
In Mokre, on Zamkowa Street, stands the brick Church of St Lawrence from the mid-sixteenth century, with a tower added in 1863. In Bujaków the Church of St Nicholas, from around 1500, serves as a shrine to Our Lady of Bujaków; the statue of the Madonna dates from about 1480.
Quite different in character is the neo-Gothic Church of St John of the Lutheran parish, built of brick in 1860-1861 to a design by Friedrich August Stüler and listed in 2006. On Plac Salwatorianów stands the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Saviour, which was built in 1931-1933 as a stage and sports hall for the Salvatorian monastery.
