Hochberg residence with original interiors, the apartment of Emperor Wilhelm II and a landscape park

Pszczyna in the rain: a castle with Hochberg interiors, two small museums, and an open-air museum and bison reserve for a dry spell.

On a wet day Pszczyna offers mainly museums: the biggest in the castle, smaller ones in a town house on the pedestrian street and in the Gardener's Cottage. The open-air museum and the bison reserve lie in the park, so leave them for a dry spell. Suggestions for bad weather elsewhere in the region sit under rainy-day ideas in Silesia, and the whole Pszczyna offer is on the Pszczyna page.

What should you visit first in Pszczyna in the rain?

The castle, today the Castle Museum in Pszczyna. The former magnate residence shows visitors rooms furnished by the Hochbergs, together with an imperial suite and the Mirror Hall.

A Gothic castle of the early 15th century originally stood here; today it is a palace. Together with its 156-hectare landscape park it forms a complex given the status of Historic Monument in April 2021. The building's story is told in the article on Destailleur's rebuilding and the emperor's headquarters, and the woman who lived here appears in the text about Daisy von Pless.

Which smaller museums in Pszczyna give shelter from the rain?

Two: one about printing, one about soldiering. The press museum is at Piastowska 26, and the military history museum at Katowicka 1.

The press collection fills an old town house on the town's main pedestrian street and includes printing machines, a linotype and newspapers of Wojciech Korfanty. It opened on 5 July 1985, and the museum itself stresses that nothing like it exists elsewhere in Poland. The military history museum is a small display of militaria in the neo-Baroque Gardener's Cottage at the edge of the park. It opened in 2014 and is run by an association commemorating the 1939 Battle of Pszczyna.

What can you do in Pszczyna when the rain stops for a while?

Visit the Pszczyna Village Farmstead and the Bison Show Reserve. Both lie in the Pszczyna park and are partly open-air, so they suit a break in the rainfall.

The open-air museum, opened in 1975, covers around two hectares. It holds a dozen or so timber folk buildings of the region: granaries from the 1700s, a water mill and other structures. The Bison Reserve, opened on 1 June 2008, has two enclosures totalling about 10 ha. An idea for a day combined with a longer walk is offered by the article Pszczyna without the castle: park, open-air museum and bison reserve.
