Industrial heritage in Ruda Śląska: a miners' housing estate, a coking plant in Orzegów and a brick shaft tower that recall the city's mining past.
Three places in different districts show how one industry was organised: housing for workers, a coking works and the top of a mine shaft. They go well with other monuments in Ruda Śląska.
Begin in Wirek at the Ficinus Workers' Colony, a row of sixteen identical sandstone houses put up in 1860-1867 for the staff of the Błogosławieństwo Boże colliery. Since 2006 it has belonged to the Industrial Monuments Route, together with Giszowiec and Nikiszowiec.
The Orzegów Coking Plant dates from 1903; part of it now serves as an educational park, and the complex is a registered monument. The Andrzej Shaft Tower is the brick headframe of the former Gottessegen mine, four storeys high, in the form known as a Małachowski tower.
Until 1922 the shaft carried the German name Aschenborn, after the mine director Adolf Aschenborn. Today a brick tower stands over it.
The local ironworks are covered in an article on the Pokój ironworks and the Sendzimir rolling mill. Similar places across the region are gathered under industrial heritage in Silesia.
