Rybnik for couples: market square, two squares with fountains, a theatre, a brine tower in Paruszowiec and a blue hiking trail to Żory.

Rybnik offers places for a shared outing, from a short stroll through the centre to a trip out of town. Most points lie in the central district and can be joined into one route. A wider choice for two is collected in for couples in Silesia, and the whole offer in attractions in Rybnik.

Where to stroll in central Rybnik?

Begin at the market square, move on to Wolności Square, then to John Paul II Square and the theatre. All four sit in the city's heart, and each has a distinct role: historic, commercial, religious and cultural.

A pond once filled the place where the market square lies, drained when the town was founded. Until the end of the 1700s the houses were wooden; masonry arrived only after the Prussian government took over the Rybnik estate in 1788. Today the frontages are mainly Classicist, with the town hall of 1823 on the west side. How the town came about is explained in a text on Rybnik from first mention to mining days.

A few steps beyond the market opens Wolności Square, which has served as a marketplace since the Middle Ages. Before 1922 it was known as Neuer Ring, the New Market. Its present look, with fountains and greenery, comes from works in 2006-2007. In front of the basilica of St Anthony, where Powstańców Śląskich meets Mikołowska, lies John Paul II Square with a bronze pope four metres tall. It was redone in 2012 and won first prize from the Society of Polish Town Planners.

An evening can end at the Rybnik Land Theatre on Kazimierz Kutz Theatre Square. Built between 1958 and 1964, it holds an auditorium for 650, a chamber stage and the Oblicza gallery, and the monuments register took it in during 2023. Steps with a lawn and a water cascade climb to it from Wolności Square.

What to plan outside the centre of Rybnik?

Outside the centre, see the brine tower in Paruszowiec-Piaski and walk part of the trail to Żory. Both places need a separate outing and fit a longer, calm afternoon in the open air.

Residents picked the idea of a brine tower in the civic budget, and it opened in April 2018 where a pool had been. Brine runs down a timber frame packed with blackthorn, while canopies shield walkers from sun and showers. Local spa traditions are described in an article on graduation towers and pump rooms.

The Trail of the Beginnings of Metallurgy is waymarked in blue. The walk starts in Rybnik and ends in Żory, passing Szczejkowice on the way, some twenty kilometres in all. Highlights are the ruins of the Waleska works and a furnace tower, relics of old ironmaking. A single section can be walked on its own.
