Architecture in Rybnik means a neo-Gothic basilica with towers reaching 95 metres, wooden churches moved from the area and a castle turned into a court.

Rybnik is built of several layers of eras, from a Gothic chancel to neo-baroque churches of mining districts. Against the regional backdrop, see architecture in Silesia; the full list of sites in town is on the Rybnik page.

Which building is the signature of Rybnik's architecture?

The Basilica of St Anthony, because its towers measure 95 metres and can be seen from afar. It is a neo-Gothic brick work of 1903-1906.

The basilica counts among the tallest churches in Upper Silesia, and townspeople informally name it the Cathedral of the Rybnik Land. Until it was raised, the main church in town was the Old Church on Plac Kościelny, built 1798-1801 in baroque-neoclassical style, which keeps carved figures of the late Middle Ages from the altar of the older parish church.

Which of Rybnik's monuments are the oldest?

The oldest are Gothic remains and wooden churches that were moved in the 20th century.

The academic church on Gliwicka Street has a Gothic chancel from the mid-15th century and is the town's oldest and smallest church. The wooden Church of St Catherine of 1534 was moved in 1976 from Gierałtowice to Wielopole, and it keeps a late-Gothic painted ceiling. In Ligota stands a second timber building, St Lawrence's Church of 1717, moved from Boguszowice. The origins of the castle on Kopernik Square reach the end of the 13th century; today it houses a district court, so you view it from outside. The town's story from its first mention is told in the article on Rybnik as a miners' town.

What architecture did mines and the 19th century give the town?

Brick buildings from the turn of eras show how working-class districts developed and how they were cared for.

In Niedobczyce stands the neo-baroque Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of 1920-1921, entered in the heritage register in 2023. The neo-baroque church in Boguszowice Stare, begun in 1929, has the same dedication. In the centre stands the Lutheran church, put up in 1853, crowned by a neo-Romanesque tower. Edukatorium Juliusz occupies a hospital of 1869 on Klasztorna Street, with an interactive exhibition on medicine and pharmacy inside.
