Where to spend time outdoors in Szopienice-Burowiec?
Biggest of all is the Szopienice-Borki nature and landscape complex, a set of ponds in former sand diggings at the junction of Katowice, Sosnowiec and Mysłowice; the area has been protected since 2000, and black-headed gulls nest there. It covers about 157 hectares, and about 200 together with the surroundings of the ponds.
Closer to the buildings are the estate parks. Anton Uthemann Park by Wiosny Ludów Street, next to the Szopienice tram loop, has a playground and is named after the creator of Giszowiec and Nikiszowiec. Olympians' Park, 2.81 hectares, has a playground and cycle route no. 5, while Hilary Krzysztofiak Square at Hallera and Obrońców Westerplatte streets has a playground, a skate point and a rain garden on the site of a former workers' colony. More about the district is under Szopienice-Burowiec, in its historic sights and in industry and technology; greenery across the region is gathered under parks and nature in Silesia.
