Museums in Zabrze: the Coal Mining Museum, an underground adit, a vintage vehicle collection and a museum of military technology.
Zabrze is one of the key places for exploring the industrial heritage of the region, but the city also has museums of a quite different kind. The six venues here suit a day spent indoors or below ground.
Which museum in Zabrze presents mining?
The seat of the Coal Mining Museum is a neo-Renaissance brick building, once the district office, of 1874-1875 at ul. 3 Maja 19; master mason Mateusz Kreiss built it, and a northern wing was added in 1906. The institution is larger than one building, since the Guido Mine, the Water Tower and the Queen Louise Adit belong to it as well. The underground routes are described in a text on Guido and Queen Louise.
Also tied to mining is the Main Kluczowa Hereditary Adit, an underground canal 14.25 kilometres long, begun in 1799, which joined Zabrze to Królewska Huta, the Chorzów of today. It was designed by Friedrich Wilhelm von Reden, working with John Baildon. Parts of it are now open to visitors.
Where can you see machines and former mines?
The Maciej Shaft Complex in Maciejów, at ul. Srebrna 6, is a group of buildings from a coal mine of the first half of the twentieth century, with a spoil heap. The shaft building with its headframe survives, as does an engine house with a two-drum Siemens-Schuckertwerke winding engine. The complex lies on the regional trail of technical monuments, and the register of monuments lists it. Other converted mines feature in an article on mines in new roles.
On the grounds of the Queen Louise Mining Open-Air Museum, in a former compressor house, stands the Museum of Vintage Vehicles at ul. Wolności 410. The Silesian Automobile Club operates it, and most of the cars belong to a private collector, with some on deposit, so the display can change. The Queen Louise adit lies next door, which makes it easy to combine with a tour of the open-air museum.
What are the other museums?
The Military Technology Museum at ul. Mochnackiego 12 presents vehicles and equipment from the era of the People's Army of Poland and the Second World War. It grew out of the “Grupa Śląsk” association, active since 1995, and has existed as a museum since November 2011. The collection includes T-34/85 and T-72 tanks and Kraz 255B and Star 660 lorries.
General regional collections belong to the Municipal Museum in Zabrze at ul. 3 Maja 6, founded on 3 October 1935 as a municipal regional room. It now runs five departments, including naive art and sport. A fuller picture of the city comes from the attractions of Zabrze, supplemented by its industrial sites and the general museums in Silesia.
