Historic sites in Gliwice: the town hall on the Rynek, the Piast Castle, modernist stores on Zwycięstwa Street and a Gothic manor in Stare Gliwice.
Eight buildings lead from medieval walls through a town hall with a clock tower to the modernism of the 1920s. Four stand in the centre, so a walk from the Rynek takes half a day.
What should you see first in central Gliwice?
In the middle of the square Rynek stands the town hall with a clock tower 41.5 metres high. The present building dates from the fifteenth century and was rebuilt after fires; remains of the first town hall's walls survive in the cellars. Inside is, among other things, the Wedding Palace.
On Pod Murami Street stands the Piast Castle, a brick structure of the mid-fourteenth century set into the old town walls. Despite its name it was never a ducal castle. Today it is a museum branch with an exhibition on the history of the Gliwice land. Local stories can be found in the article on Villa Caro, the Polytechnic and the canal.
Which modernist buildings stand on Zwycięstwa Street?
Three of them are worth seeing one after another. The Ikar Department Store at number 23 was built in 1927-1930 from plans by Justus Fiegler; in its first years it belonged to the American Woolworth concern. At number 30 stands the eclectic Hotel Diament of 1895, formerly the Schlesischer Hof, still working as a hotel. At number 37 you will find the Weichmann Textile House of 1921-1922, one of Erich Mendelsohn's first designs, shown in 1923 at the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar.
Where do you find older traces outside the centre?
In Stare Gliwice on Wiejska Street stand two monuments. The seventeenth-century granary belonged to the Franciscan monastery's estates and is listed in the monuments register from 1960. A little further, at number 16B, you will see a Gothic knight's manor of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, converted into a grain store in the nineteenth.
Technology fans will like the narrow-gauge railway bridge over the Kłodnica of 1907, a reinforced-concrete truss twenty metres long, rebuilt after the war.
