exhibitions on mining, a bourgeois parlour, village culture and the history of the Jews in Jaworzno

Solo in Jaworzno means touring churches across the town's districts, a museum in a former mine building and a library on the main square.

Jaworzno grew from several old settlements, so sightseeing alone resembles a journey from district to district at a pace you set. Ideas for the whole region are gathered in things to do alone in Silesia, while the Jaworzno page covers the town in full.

Where should you start sightseeing Jaworzno on your own?

In the centre, where the collegiate church, the city museum and the library stand close together. It is a good base before heading to the districts.

The collegiate church in the centre was built in brick in 1532 and rebuilt many times; it has a large stained-glass window on its front wall. The Jaworzno City Museum has run since 1972 and is housed in a former mining building on Pocztowa Street; its displays cover mining, an old drawing room, the rural tradition of the area and the culture of Jaworzno's Jews. The Municipal Public Library on the square moved in 2007 into a purpose-built home on the square that holds a gallery, a café and screening rooms, which also suits a wet day.

Which churches in the districts of Jaworzno are worth seeing?

Eight churches, from neo-Gothic to 20th-century modernism and an adapted villa, show how the town grew around industrial works.

The neo-Gothic Church of St Elizabeth of Hungary in Szczakowa, from 1898-1903, was built of local limestone and brick. In Jeleń the Church of the Holy Cross grew around a chapel of 1691, and in Byczyna stands the brick Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church in Dąbrowa Narodowa also dates from the 1930s. In Ciężkowice you can visit the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and in Osiedle Stałe the shrine with a crowned image, built in 1983-1997. The most unusual is the church in Pieczyska, set up in a cement-works director's villa of 1909.

Going alone, you have time to study each building separately. The dates form an interesting line: a chapel of 1691 in Jeleń, neo-Gothic from the turn of the 20th century in Szczakowa, a villa of 1909 in Pieczyska and churches of the 1930s in Byczyna and Dąbrowa Narodowa.

Where can you read more about the town and its surroundings?

Industrial history is covered in the article on Szczakowa and the town of power stations. Green enclaves in the agglomeration's towns appear in the text on reserves in GZM towns.
