What to see in Osiedle Tysiąclecia in Katowice: two churches built in the 1980s and 1990s and a square commemorating the Ostashkov prisoners.
Osiedle Tysiąclecia is a district of Katowice where new parishes built their own churches. There are few places to visit, but each has a specific story.
The estate has two parish churches, both built for new communities in the second half of the twentieth century. The Church of Our Lady of Piekary at Ułańska 13 is a brick building in a modernist style, consecrated in 1990.
The parish was established on 1 September 1985, and construction began on 23 April 1985. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Our Lady Healer of the Sick on Mieszka I Street consists of two churches, a lower and an upper one. Building lasted from 1979 to 1994, and the foundation stone was blessed by John Paul II.
The Ostashkov Prisoners Square is a small square near Chorzowska, Ułańska and Bolesława Chrobrego streets, close to the main entrance of the Silesian Park. The name refers to more than 6,300 Poles held in the camp at Ostashkov. An information board stands on the square.
