Things to do in Podlesie: a forest railway viaduct, a listed bridge over the Mleczna, a former municipal hall and a long PTTK trail in Katowice.

Podlesie is a district of Katowice that joined the city in 1975 together with Kostuchna. It has kept former municipal buildings and bridges, and beside them a forest with a disused railway viaduct.

What should you see first in Podlesie?

Begin with the Podlesie municipal hall at Uniczowska 36 and two bridges: the Gypsy Bridge (Most Cygański) and the bridge over the Mleczna. The hall helps you understand the former municipality, and the bridges show two different faces of engineering.

The former municipal office dates from 1912, has a clock from 1913 and now houses a library and a local tradition room. It served as an office until 1975, when Podlesie was joined to Katowice. The Gypsy Bridge is a disused railway viaduct of reinforced concrete hidden in the Gniotek forest: about 10 metres high and 20 metres wide, it was built around 1918. The bridge over the Mleczna in Zaopusta is a two-span arched crossing of stone and brick from the turn of the twentieth century, entered in the register of monuments since 20 February 1984.

Where can you take a longer walk in Podlesie?

For a longer hike, take the Żwakowski Trail, a black PTTK walking trail of 35.5 km. It begins at Katowice Piotrowice station, runs through Żwaków and Panewniki and ends in Tychy-Paprocany.

The whole route is 35.5 km, so most people walk only a section of it.

Which church and cemetery are in Podlesie?

The district has the brick Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa from 1921 on Michałowskiego Street. Building began in 1920, just after the First World War. It is in a historicist style, with a copy of the Jasna Góra image in the main altar.

On the same street lies the cemetery on Michałowskiego Street, founded in 1922, still in use, with a brick chapel and two sections of different layout. It is above all a burial place for the district's residents, so visit it with respect.
