What to see in Koszutka: the Spodek arena, Rondo Sztuki, plac Grunwaldzki with the Artists Gallery and parks in the north of Katowice.

Koszutka is a district of Katowice with one of the city's best-known buildings, Spodek, and with several green squares and parks. You stroll between the modern Culture Zone and quieter squares, so it is easy to plan a route for half a day.

What to see first in Koszutka?

Start with Spodek at aleja Wojciecha Korfantego 35. It is an arena from 1964-1971, designed by Maciej Gintowt and Maciej Krasiński, opened on 8 May 1971, in the form of a truncated upturned cone covered with aluminium scales. It ranks among the most recognisable landmarks of the city, and its complex is entered in the register of monuments. Part of the complex is the modernist ice rink hall, called Satelita, with public sessions and hockey matches.

Nearby stands Rondo Sztuki, an exhibition gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts on the upper floor of a half-dome building from 2007, on the General Ziętek roundabout. It shows graphic art, photography and design. Next to it rise the towers of the .KTW office buildings at aleja Roździeńskiego 1 in the Culture Zone. It is an office building, so the interiors are not open, but you can see the form and the adjoining square.

In front of the International Congress Centre on plac Sławika i Antalla stands the monument to Henryk Sławik and József Antall senior, made of two steel walls and unveiled in 2015. It commemorates two heroes of the Second World War.

Where to relax among greenery in Koszutka?

The district's green spaces are collected under parks and nature in Koszutka. Plac Grunwaldzki lies in the northern part of the city, between ulica Sokolska, ulica Morcinka and ulica Broniewskiego. It is a green square with paths, benches, the Olympic fountain and sculptures. On the square stands the Artists Gallery, an open-air collection of bronze busts of artists connected with Katowice, added to every year since 2004, and the Family monument from 1963, a sculpture by Jerzy Kwiatkowski showing parents lifting a child.

Alojzy Budniok Park between ulica Chorzowska and ulica Stęślickiego covers 4.5 ha, with paths, a playground, football pitches and old trees. Plac Gwarków at the junction of aleja Korfantego and ulica Katowicka is surrounded by the buildings of the Central Mining Institute; it has a sculpture called Kula and a playground. Entry to all these places is free.

What church is in Koszutka?

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on ulica Misjonarzy Oblatów is a parish and monastery church of the Oblates, built in 1936-1937 and extended in 1957 and 1999. The friars bought the land here in 1936.
