Churches and monasteries in Bielsko-Biała: from the Gothic St Nicholas Cathedral to the wooden St Barbara's Church and the Lutheran Bielski Syjon.

The city grew from two towns, Bielsko and Biała, so Catholic and Lutheran churches stand side by side, in Gothic, Baroque, Neo-Gothic and late Modernist styles. This is a guide to the churches, chapels and church complexes in Silesia, from the centre to the outer districts, with addresses and tips for linking them into a route.

Which churches in Bielsko-Biała should you see first?

Start with St Nicholas Cathedral, the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Church of Divine Providence. Each comes from a different era: a Gothic church rebuilt in the early twentieth century, concrete architecture of the 1980s and the late Baroque.

The cathedral stands at plac św. Mikołaja 16a, in the Old Town. It is Gothic, dating from the fifteenth century, and took its present shape when Leopold Bauer rebuilt it in 1909-1912. Its tower is 61 metres tall. The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus at ulica Traugutta 13 is completely different: it was built in 1981-1986 and stands on 82 concrete pillars, with decorative metalwork by Bronisław Chromy. The Church of Divine Providence in the Biała Krakowska district is a late Baroque church from 1760-1769; inside are a Rococo pulpit and an organ with 40 stops.

Where are the oldest and the wooden churches?

The oldest is St Stanislaus's Church in Stare Bielsko, and the oldest wooden one is St Barbara's in Mikuszowice Krakowskie, dating from 1690. They lie in distant parts of the city, so plan a separate trip for them.

St Stanislaus's at ulica Sobieskiego 176A was built around 1380 from quarry stone and brick. It is a single-nave Gothic building with a 25-metre tower, surrounded by an old cemetery, and it is regarded as the oldest sacred building in Bielsko-Biała. St Barbara's Church on ulica Cyprysowa is wooden, still a parish church, and is a key stop on the wooden-architecture route that crosses the voivodeship. Inside you will find polychromes by Johann Mentil from 1723 and a copy of a triptych from around 1470.

In Hałcnów, at ulica Wyzwolenia 332, stands the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Baroque church of 1777-1784 is a shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows and was raised to a minor basilica in 2016. Pilgrims came here for the figure known as the Pietà of Hałcnów.

Where can you see Lutheran churches in Bielsko-Biała?

Begin at Bielski Syjon, around plac Marcina Lutra. From 1782 the city's Lutheran community gathered here, and the area holds a church, a school, a burial ground and Luther's monument. The whole complex is under monument protection.

The Church of the Saviour on plac Marcina Lutra was built in 1782-1790, later remodelled in the Neo-Gothic spirit, and has a tower about 68 metres high. It belongs to the Evangelical-Augsburg parish and is the bishop's church of the Diocese of Cieszyn. In Biała Krakowska, on ulica Staszica, you will find the Martin Luther Church of 1788, regarded as the first Protestant church in Galicia, with historic organs.

Two more churches stand on ulica Sobieskiego. The Church of the Holy Trinity at number 10a is a late Gothic building of 1604-1608, raised in memory of the victims of the plague and, until 2014, a garrison church. At number 110 is the Lutheran Church of St John the Baptist, a Neoclassical church of 1818-1827 built on an old stronghold site in Stare Bielsko. Its tower was added in 1852. A small brick church of 1899 in the Kamienica cemetery is the Lutheran Church in Kamienica, built on the site of a wooden bell tower.

Which district churches are worth a visit?

The districts hold Neo-Gothic and brick churches by well-known architects. They suit short stops if you are heading that way anyway.

In Komorowice stands the brick Church of St John the Baptist, begun in 1921 by the architect Emanuel Rost junior, who took the cathedral of St Nicholas as his model. Mind the similar names: it is a different church from the Lutheran one in Stare Bielsko. In Lipnik, at ulica księdza Stanisława Brzóski 3, you will find the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, rebuilt in 1880-1885 after a fire in 1879, with a Gothic statue of the Madonna from the fourteenth century.

In Straconka there is the Neo-Gothic Church of Our Lady of Consolation of 1872-1875, with a Gothic Madonna from the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In Kamienica, on ulica Karpacka, stands St Margaret's Church of 1897-1899, designed by the Viennese architect Carl Steinhofer, with a 40-metre copper-roofed tower. In Wapienica, St Francis of Assisi's Church grew out of a chapel from 1931.

Is there a castle chapel in Bielsko-Biała?

Yes. The Castle Chapel of St Anne adjoins the castle of the Sułkowski princes on its southern side. It was added in 1853-1855 in memory of Princess Anna, and members of the Sułkowski family rest in its crypt.

For the history of the castle, read the article Zamek Sułkowskich w Bielsku-Białej: od grodu do muzeum, which is worth reading before a walk around the Old Town.

How do you link the churches of Bielsko-Biała into a route?

The simplest way is to follow the streets that repeat in the addresses. Ulica Sobieskiego links the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Lutheran Church of St John the Baptist and St Stanislaus's Church, while plac Marcina Lutra gathers the Church of the Saviour and the whole Bielski Syjon. The cathedral on plac św. Mikołaja completes the picture.

The districts (Hałcnów, Lipnik, Komorowice, Wapienica, Straconka, Kamienica, Mikuszowice Krakowskie) lie far apart, so it is easier to visit them one at a time. While you are here, look at the city's other collections: museums, monuments and cemeteries and memorials. A broader overview is on the page about things to do in Bielsko-Biała, and churches from the whole region are in the churches and monasteries collection.
