Goldstein Palace
Katowice, Plac Wolności 12a

an industrialists' villa of 1872 with allegories of industry, science and fine arts on its façade

Palaces in Katowice: the Goldstein Palace, the Załęże palace, the Bishop's Palace by the cathedral and a small palace in Murcki.

Four residences from different eras and districts. None is a museum: they now hold a registry office, a hospital, a diocesan curia and a nursery school, so you view them from outside. Palaces from across the region are described under palaces in Silesia, and for everything else in the city go to the Katowice overview.

Which palaces stand in central Katowice?

Two stand downtown: the Goldstein Palace on plac Wolności and the Bishop's Palace on ulica Jordana. Their fates and uses differ.

The Goldstein Palace was a neo-Renaissance home built for two brothers, Abraham and Josef Goldstein, and finished in 1872, although the register of monuments extends the works to 1875. Their family firm kept sawmills across the old Prussian and Russian frontier. Today the building houses a registry office. The Bishop's Palace of 1927-1933 is a brick edifice and houses the offices of the Katowice archdiocese. It stands right beside Christ the King Cathedral and was designed by the cathedral's creators, Zygmunt Gawlik and Franciszek Mączyński.

Where can I find palaces outside the centre?

Two palaces lie on the outskirts: in Załęże and in Murcki. Both can be seen from the street but not from inside.

The Załęże Palace at ulica Gliwicka 159 is a neoclassical building of 1886-1887, the former seat of the Giesche company's directorate. It houses a private hospital. The Palace of the Princes of Pszczyna was raised in 1905 by the Hochberg family on Wanda's Hill in Murcki. Since 1975 it has housed Municipal Nursery School no. 72.
