Tenement houses in Katowice: the modernist Wędlikowski House, the brick Piechulek house, Louis Dame's ensemble and the former Wojko café.

Four addresses in the city centre, two from the 1930s and two from around 1900. Seen together, they show how the look of urban housing changed. Similar buildings from other towns are gathered under tenement houses in Silesia, while the Katowice overview lists the rest of the capital's sights.

Where can I see Katowice modernism?

Two tenements from the 1930s stand on ulica PCK and ulica Raciborska. Both have rounded or projecting corners.

The Wędlikowski House at ulica PCK 10 went up in the late 1930s, and its designer was Stanisław Gruszka. The building has five storeys, a rounded corner and a stairwell that kept its original look. It counts among the local symbols of modernism. The tenement of engineer Jan Piechulek at Raciborska 48 is a little older, dating from 1932. It is a brick building in the spirit of functionalism, with a corner oriel and a place in the register of monuments. Piechulek's own firm built it, and he later moved in himself.

What sets the tenements around 1900 apart?

Tenements from around 1900 carry richer detail: helmets on the corners or a historicist facade. Two such addresses are Piastowska 3 and Mickiewicza 8.

The ensemble at Piastowska 3 consists of four houses designed by Louis Dame, entered in the register of monuments. You recognise them by the corner helmets. The former Wojko café sits in a rental house of 1900 at Mickiewicza 8, built in a historicist style with Art Nouveau touches. From 1935 it held eateries.
