A rainy day in Wisła: museums from Małysz to Ochorowicz, an educational farm for children and a covered amphitheatre in the park. Eight places under cover.

When the Beskids turn wet, the trails lose their appeal, and Wisła has a surprising number of interiors to offer. There are museums of sport, technology and history, villas with an interesting past, and a few ideas for families with children. The overview is arranged by theme.

Which Wisła museums are devoted to skiing and the mountains?

Three places honour skiing and mountain hiking: the Beskid Skiing Centre, the Adam Małysz Sports Trophies Gallery and the Mountain Tourism Museum at Przysłop. The first two are in town, the third in a clearing below Barania Góra.

The Beskid Skiing Centre sits on Bulwar Księżycowy and works as an interactive museum: the exhibition is split into five zones, with Małysz's trophies and ski-jump simulators among them. The story centres on ski jumping but starts well before it. The institution descends from the private Zimowit museum, and its new hall holds more than eighty antique exhibits, including skis over a century old. The gallery, opened at 1 Maja 48a in 2007, displays roughly a thousand keepsakes of the jumper, among them trophies, medals, skis and suits. The man it celebrates was born in Wisła in 1977 and has four Olympic medals to his name. Wider background is in the article Ski jumping in Wisła-Malinka.

The Przysłop museum is a small PTTK facility in a wooden building next to the mountain hut. Its three rooms, some forty square metres in all, trace how hiking developed in this part of the Beskids. It is worth adding to an outing around Barania Góra.

Where to learn about the region's history and people

The Beskid Museum belongs to the Museum of Cieszyn Silesia and fills the old Protestant tavern built in 1827. It opened in 1964 during the first Beskid Culture Week, and its holdings cover highlander life, from household items and furnishings to clothing, folk art and canvases by a few regional painters.

Ochorowiczówka, at Juliana Ochorowicza 6, is the villa where the philosopher and psychologist Julian Ochorowicz set up his home and laboratory. He moved to Wisła around 1899. Today a museum operates in the villa. The Parachuting and Special Forces Museum in Villa Agawa at Przylesie 1a has commemorated Lieutenant Colonel Adolf Pilch, a Cichociemny paratrooper and Home Army soldier, since 2003. Its holdings exceed ten thousand items: badges, documents, uniforms, equipment and photographs. It is a place of military history that calls for a quiet, factual visit.

What to plan with children or for an evening

The educational farm operates at an agritourism farm some two kilometres from the centre. It shows children life in a Beskid village and runs workshops, for example on a day on the farm, on the path of water and on processing fruit. The Stanisław Hadyna Amphitheatre in the park by Hoff Square has a roofed stage and an audience area covered by a membrane structure, so rain does not spoil events. It is the town's main open-air stage, home to the Beskid Culture Week. More about Wisła is in the article Wisła: from a shepherds' settlement to a summer resort.
