Parks in Tarnowskie Góry are green spaces on former mine heaps: the town park with a viewing tower, Repty, Paulsborn and silver-mining sites.

In Tarnowskie Góry greenery often stands where ore was once dug, so a walk in a park doubles as a lesson in mining history. The nine places differ in size, from a small patch by a forge to a landscape park of several hundred hectares.

Which park in Tarnowskie Góry suits a short walk?

For a first look at the town the best choice is the Municipal Park, a green area of 21.5 hectares in the centre. It began to take shape in 1903, and its paths cross former spoil heaps that are now part of the UNESCO listing. Climb the viewing tower and walk around the pond with its fountain.

A few shorter stops can be picked by interest. Reden Park on Opolska Street is a small green plot on old workings, with a pay hall and a forge nearly two centuries old. In Bobrowniki Śląskie Kunszt Park wraps around a heap where silver and lead were struck in 1784, and veteran lime trees grow here. Piny Park in Osada Jana, laid out in the mid-1970s, has uneven ground left by old mining and a gravel pit.

Where to feel old mining and rest away from crowds

The starkest character belongs to the spoil heap of the old washing plant, on the southern edge. It was piled up from waste left after washing ore, rare calamine grassland now covers it, and it gives a panorama of the town. The heap is on the UNESCO list.

Two more peaceful spots are a monastery park and a former garden. The Camillian Fathers' Park of 1910 is monastery ground on about 5 hectares: a grotto copying Lourdes, an avenue of limes and a friars' cemetery where a gallows once stood. Paulsborn, a garden made by Dr Paul Wossidlo in 1895, also survives, with a pond and a karst spring among allotments on Cegielniana Street.

Where to find a larger green area in Tarnowskie Góry

A half-day fits Repty Park, which grew from a deer park of the Henckel von Donnersmarck family and covers about 200 hectares. It is a protected monument. In Strzybnica there is also Hutnik Park, with an amphitheatre and a concert shell.

After the parks it is worth going underground. Visitors can learn about the underground route in a piece on the silver mine, while the first miners feature in a history text about Rybka and Roździeński. A wider choice of green places is in the parks category, and everything in town is under Tarnowskie Góry attractions.
