Mountains in Katowice are in practice walking trails: Dolinka Murckowska, the Forest Park, Ochojec and long PTTK routes. Seven marked routes.

Katowice does not lie in the mountains, so if you want a hike you will find marked PTTK trails through the forests, parks and valleys of the city and neighbouring towns. All are free, and their length ranges from under three to over a hundred kilometres.

Which walking trails run through Katowice?

The shortest is the Wesoła Fala Trail, a green route of about 2.7 km that links Dolinka Murckowska in Murcki with the Wesoła Fala centre in Mysłowice. Its small scale makes it a good idea for a short walk. Just as short is the Park Trail, a black route of about 4.2 km that begins in Kościuszko Park by the church of St Michael the Archangel and ends in Katowice Forest Park.

A medium length belongs to the Dolinka Murckowska Trail: black, 6.8 km, from the Bolina centre through Giszowiec and Stara Wesoła to Dolinka Murckowska. The Ochojec Trail leads from Ochojec past the Ochojec nature reserve and the Murcki forests to Lędziny, over between seventeen and eighteen kilometres.

Which routes are long enough for a whole day?

The Katowice Walking Trail is blue and about twenty-four kilometres long. It begins in Chorzów at the Voivodeship Park of Culture and Recreation and ends at Hamerla, by Trutowisko, so it crosses the middle of the conurbation. The Żwakowski Trail is a black route of 35.5 km that starts at Katowice Piotrowice station, passes through Żwaków, Panewniki and Mikołów, and ends in Tychy-Paprocany.

The longest is the PTTK 25th Anniversary Trail, a green loop of around 115 kilometres that starts and ends in the Silesian Park in Chorzów. It passes through Siemianowice Śląskie, Będzin, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Sosnowiec, Jaworzno, Ruda Śląska and Katowice.

How to choose a trail and combine it with the city's greenery?

For a short outing choose the Park Trail or the Wesoła Fala Trail, and for a day trip the Katowice Walking Trail. The routes from Ochojec and Murcki suit anyone who wants to combine walking with a forest, while the long Żwakowski Trail is for experienced walkers. Watch the waymarks: PTTK marks its routes with a stripe on a white background in the colour of the trail.

Walks through city greenery without waymarks are described on the page parks and nature in Katowice, and other ideas on the page things to do in Katowice.

Frequently asked questions

Are there mountains in Katowice?

No. The city lies on an upland, and the marked walking trails through forests and valleys stand in for mountains here. Real mountains begin further away, in the Beskids.

Which trail in Katowice is the shortest?

The Wesoła Fala Trail, green, about 2.7 km, from Dolinka Murckowska to Wesoła Fala.

Which trail links the city's two biggest parks?

The Park Trail, black, about 4.2 km, from Kościuszko Park to Katowice Forest Park.

Where does the PTTK 25th Anniversary Trail start and end?

In the Silesian Park in Chorzów. It is a loop, so the route returns to the same place.
