Churches in Zawiercie: a neo-Gothic red-brick basilica, a church in Kromołów with a bell from 1508 and a church in Skarżyce.
Seven places are spread across several districts: the centre, Kromołów and Skarżyce. They include churches from the 16th century to the 1990s and one building that stopped being a church long ago.
Which church in Zawiercie should you see first?
Start with the Collegiate Basilica of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul at Sienkiewicza 4. Red brick, neo-Gothic style and two towers on the facade mark this building of 1896-1903, which stands behind a historic fence. It has been a minor basilica since 2009 and a collegiate church since 1992.
For a broader comparison see churches and monasteries in Silesia, and for the general picture of the town go to Zawiercie.
The town centre
The basilica came from the drawing board of the Warsaw architect Hugon Kuder, with money from Adolf and Izydor Ginsberg. It is listed as a monument.
A quite different story belongs to the former Lutheran church at Bohaterów Westerplatte 24. This brick neo-Gothic building has served as the House of Crafts since its post-war reconstruction. It is no longer a working church, but the pointed arches give away its earlier purpose.
Kromołów: the oldest sites
St Nicholas's Church at Jurajska 4A is regarded as the oldest Catholic church in the town. It dates from the 16th century, is brick, single-nave, with a three-sided chancel. It holds a bell from 1508, and its founders were members of the Cromoli family.
Above the source of the Warta river stands the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, octagonal, brick, from 1803. It was rebuilt in 1988, after the level of the surrounding streets had risen. The chapel appears in the municipal register of monuments.
Skarżyce and newer churches
The Church of the Holy Trinity and St Florian in Skarżyce, consecrated in 1598, stands out for a rare plan: three round chapels refer to the Trinity. A Marian shrine operates here as well.
Two parish churches date from the later 20th century. The Church of Our Lady, Queen of Poland was built in 1974-1980 and features stained glass by Wincenty Kućma and a bell tower 51 metres high. The Church of St Brother Albert went up in 1988-1992, and in front of it stands a bronze monument to the patron by Czesław Dźwigaj.
What else to see in Zawiercie
After the churches you can continue to historic sites in Zawiercie, as well as cemeteries and monuments or parks and nature. Kromołów and Skarżyce lie outside the centre, so it is best to reach them separately.
