Churches and chapels in Dąbrowa Górnicza: two basilicas, a Baroque church on a limestone hill and wooden chapels from the eighteenth century.

This town in the Dąbrowa Basin has places of worship from several eras, from eighteenth-century chapels to churches raised after 1980. The guide covers a dozen and more sites in the centre and the districts: Gołonóg, Strzemieszyce, Łęka, Ząbkowice, Błędów, Mydlice, Ujejsce and Trzebiesławice.

Which churches in Dąbrowa Górnicza should you see first?

Start with the two basilicas: the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels and the Basilica of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Both are Neo-Gothic and both are shrines, but they stand in different parts of town.

The first is at ulica Królowej Jadwigi 12. It was built in 1898-1912 and has three towers in its facade, the tallest reaching 86 metres above the town. It replaced the smaller church of St Alexander from 1875-1877, which soon proved too cramped. The second, built of brick, is in Strzemieszyce Wielkie at ulica Ofiar Katynia 34a. It rose in 1903-1910 on the initiative of Father Tadeusz Konarski and has carried the title of minor basilica since 2008.

What stands on the limestone hill in Gołonóg?

It is St Anthony's Church at ulica Kościelna 20, a Baroque building of 1675-1678 on a hill 335 metres above sea level. Today it is the shrine of St Anthony of Padua, run by Conventual Franciscans.

The founder was Andrzej Trzebicki, Bishop of Kraków, who consecrated the church three years after founding it. Originally it had a single nave and a wooden tower and served as the main parish church. The building is under monument protection, which makes it a good stop for lovers of the Baroque.

What can you see among the brick and Neo-Gothic churches?

Brick and Neo-Gothic dominate the districts. Each church has its own building story, and some took decades to finish.

In Łęka stands the Neo-Romanesque Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa of 1897-1905, with a Neo-Baroque high altar and Neo-Gothic side altars. In Ząbkowice you will find the Neo-Gothic Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, a three-aisled building with a basilica layout, blessed on 16 December 1905, whose tower was added in 1934. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Łośnie was built in 1890-1910 through the efforts of Father Jan Bronikowski and a local committee, and consecrated only in 1960.

The story of St Barbara's Church at ulica Legionów Polskich 36 is an interesting one. Lutherans built it in 1882, and since 1945 it has served Catholics; it took its present dedication in 1957. The brick body survives, and the interior was thoroughly renovated after 2000.

Where do you find modern and post-war churches?

You can see such churches in several places, and their designers and founders are known by name. All of them still serve as parish churches.

St Joseph's Church at ulica Marii Konopnickiej 62 is a Modernist building of 1938-1948 designed by Józef Jaworski, and its hallmarks are the tall openwork tower and the windows by Zofia Baudouin de Courtenay. The war interrupted construction, and the walls were blessed as early as 1940. The Church of Christ the King on ulica 11 Listopada is a brick three-aisled church designed by Wacław Moskalik, begun in 1957 and blessed in 2001. On the Mydlice estate, at ulica Żeromskiego, stands the Church of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, designed by Zygmunt Fagas, the architect of the whole estate; it was consecrated in 2005.

In Ząbkowice, on ulica Oświecenia, is the brick Church of St Mary Magdalene. Parishioners built it from 1987, and it was consecrated in 2010. Its stained glass of 2003-2005 shows the Stations of the Cross. In Błędów stands the Church of the Most Holy Trinity of 1952-1960, with a high altar in the Neo-Gothic style.

Are there old chapels in Dąbrowa Górnicza?

Yes. Several small chapels have survived in the districts, and some of them, wooden or of stone, go back to the eighteenth century. They make a good short walk when you are visiting a nearby parish church.

St Catherine's Chapel in Ujejsce, on ulica Kryniczna, is wooden with a shingle roof. It was founded in 1784 and stands beside the parish church as part of a former manor. In Trzebiesławice stands the brick Chapel of Our Lady Help of Christians, listed as a monument in 1967, with fittings and a bell from the eighteenth century.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Strzemieszyce Małe is a stone building from the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and in 1957-1968 it served as a parish chapel. In Błędów, look in at the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built of stone and blessed in 1919; after the wooden parish church burned down, Masses were held there in 1951-1954.

How do you plan a visit to the churches of Dąbrowa Górnicza?

It is best to group churches by district: Gołonóg and Strzemieszyce in one trip, Ząbkowice (two churches) in another, and Błędów with its church and chapel in a third. The basilica in the centre needs a separate part of the day.

Many sites list only the town as their address, so check how to get there before you set out.
