Churches in Wisła: a neo-Gothic Catholic church, a classicist Lutheran church in the centre and the wooden Chapel of St Hedwig on Zadni Groń.

In Wisła, Lutherans have formed a large part of the population for centuries, which is why Lutheran churches rise next to Catholic ones. The eight buildings lie in the centre and in the districts of Głębce, Jawornik, Czarne and Malinka.

Which church in Wisła should you see in the centre?

By the main promenade stands the Lutheran Church of Saints Peter and Paul, classicist, built in 1833-1838 on the site of an earlier wooden prayer house. It arose under the Patent of Toleration and ranks among the most important buildings of that denomination in the town.

The Catholic church of the centre is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, neo-Gothic, built in 1851-1865 and extended from 1970; large stained-glass windows stand out inside. The story of the village is told in the article on the summer resort and the presidents' residence.

Where are the wooden churches in Wisła?

The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross in Głębce, on Kopydło Street, is timber and reinforced concrete and dates from 1981-1983. Its oldest part is a tower of 1575, moved from the church in Połomia, which collapsed in 1969.

The Chapel of St Hedwig of Silesia is a wooden Tyrolean-style building of 1909 on the Wooden Architecture Trail. It stands within the grounds of the President's residence on Zadni Groń in Czarne, so do not assume you can get in.

How were the Lutheran churches of the districts created?

Many began as catechetical houses. The church in Czarne was consecrated in 1972, the chapel in Jawornik is part of a house from the 1980s, and the church in Głębce was consecrated in 2017 as successor to an earlier chapel. In Malinka the Lutheran church of the 1950s was funded by parishioners' contributions on land donated by Andrzej Sikora.
