Neo-Romantic park of an industrialist with a gloriette, a pond and old trees, entered in the heritage register

Parks in Sosnowiec: over twenty green places, from Sielec Park on the Czarna Przemsza to the hundred-hectare Millennium Park. Entry is free.

Industrial Sosnowiec turns out to be greener than its image: there are parks beside old residences, land left by closed mines, woodland and riverside promenades. No single park dominates, since each has its own use, whether a long march, a workout, children's play or a look at veteran trees. All of them cost nothing to enter. Wider lists are in the Parks section and among the attractions in Sosnowiec.

Which park in Sosnowiec should you choose for a first walk?

Begin with Sielec Park, the largest of the town's historic parks. Twenty hectares on the banks of the Czarna Przemsza in Sielec were designed as a landscape garden in the English manner, beside Sielec Castle. Twelve of its trees and tree groups are protected as natural monuments. Access is from Zamkowa Street.

If you prefer open space and movement, go to Millennium Park. It measures one hundred and two hectares, lies in Milowice on the former Saturn colliery site, and offers educational paths and cycling routes. The third direction is the thirty-hectare Jacek Kuroń Park in Kazimierz at Anki Kowalskiej 2A, with its ponds and amphitheatre.

Where to walk along the Czarna Przemsza?

The river links several green places into one route. The nearly six-kilometre Czarna Przemsza Boulevard runs beside the river as a cycle lane and a separate footpath, and part of it follows the Way of St James. That makes it equally good for a march or a ride.

Right by the river is also the Scout Park, known locally as Koła. It lies behind the flood banks. A multisensory garden was created here, together with an orchard, roses and mazes made of plants.

In Sielec stands another trace of the industrial family: Schön Park on the Czarna Przemsza at 1 Maja 19, a small remnant of the palace park laid out in 1875-1879, with protected trees. In Środula a larger complex extends: the Schön Palace and Park Complex at Chemiczna 12, with two palaces, a landscape park and ancillary buildings put up for the Schön brothers. The residences of Sosnowiec's industrialists are discussed in the article on the palaces and mausoleums of Dietel and Schön.

Which parks have a history reaching back to the early twentieth century?

Several of Sosnowiec's green spaces are a century old. Dietl Park in Pogoń was founded in 1901 by the industrialist Henryk Dietl beside his palace. A garden pavilion and a pond were renewed there.

Fusiński Park, from 1935, lies on the left bank of the Brynica, by Kresowa and Piłsudskiego streets. Today it holds an exotarium and a Biodiversity Park. Milowice has two smaller ones: Prince Józef Poniatowski Park, from 1912, just under a hectare planted with false acacia and horse chestnut, and Milowice Park, from 1922, called the Park with the Stone, where a memorial boulder sits next to a playground and open-air exercise equipment.

In Klimontów, look in at Wanda Malczewska Park: a small space where a shrine of 1746, shaped like a tower, shares the ground with two trees that hold the status of natural monuments.

Where to take children, and where to work out?

Many parks in Sosnowiec have a playground, but a few stand out for their equipment. The Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński Children's Play Garden in Milowice, on the Kalety estate, covers about two and a half hectares, and its playground was refurbished in 2020. Niwka Park, set in a former open-cast coal pit, offers an outdoor pool for summer, a fitness park and a play area.

Środula Park spreads over a slope off 3 Maja Street. It has an artificial ski run, a children's garden and open-air exercise stations. Teenagers and adults will find activity in Kępa Park in Zagórze, with a skate park and the start of a cycle route through the forest, and in Forest Park in Niwka, with a jump park and a nature-education path.

Where to find a forest and a longer bike ride?

The Zagórze Forest is a complex of about four hundred and twenty-five hectares in Zagórze and Kazimierz. Among the trees survive bunkers dating from 1944, and a cycle route crosses the woods. On the way you can look in at Kępa Park, where that route begins.

If you plan a day outdoors, combine the forest with one of the larger parks or with the river boulevard. Other green enclaves of the conurbation are covered in the article on reserves and green areas in the towns of the metropolis.

Which small neighbourhood parks are worth knowing?

Beyond the big complexes the town has quiet district parks. Włodzimierz Mazur Park in Porąbka on Minerów Street covers one and a half hectares and has been recognised as a park since 2018. Wygoda Park in Modrzejów, right beside a pine wood, covers about three hectares and has pergolas, a playground and an outdoor gym.

Środula Okrzei Park on Stefan Okrzei Street, also just over three hectares, is known for its old poplars.

How to arrange a day by district?

Parks combine easily by neighbourhood. Milowice holds four sites: Millennium Park, the Baczyński Play Garden, Milowice Park and Poniatowski Park, which makes it the best area for a whole day with a break at the playground. In Sielec, Sielec Park and Schön Park are neighbours, and in Środula there are Środula Park, Środula Okrzei Park and the Schön palace complex.

Zagórze offers Kępa Park and the forest, and Niwka has Forest Park, joined by Niwka Park in Dańdówka. Such a plan lets you visit two or three places without crossing between opposite ends of the town, and the river boulevard ties some of them into one route.
