Culture in Silesia means Spodek, the Silesian Planetarium, libraries in unusual buildings and culture houses. See where to go when you want more than a museum.

The list covers a dozen or so places in several cities, from Katowice and Chorzów to Cieszyn. They are buildings where people read, see exhibitions and go to concerts, and many are historic monuments themselves. Most lie in Katowice; details are on the pages for Katowice and Śródmieście.

Which cultural places in Katowice are worth seeing?

The symbol of the city is Spodek, an arena built in 1964-1971 in the shape of a truncated inverted cone covered in aluminium scales; the whole Spodek complex was listed as a monument in 2025. The Culture Zone is described in an article on the way from a mine to a city of music. In the same zone stands CINiBA, a shared library of two universities opened in 2012, and on Rady Europy Square the Silesian Library, whose origins go back to 1922.

In Śródmieście, on Korfantego Avenue, stands the Pavilion of the Bureau of Art Exhibitions, a functionalist building from the 1960s with reliefs and glass mosaics, listed as a monument in 2024. On Mikołowska Street lies the Youth Palace, a complex of ten buildings from 1948-1951. In Nikiszowiec the Wilson Shaft Gallery is a private contemporary art gallery in a brick pay hall from 1915, the former back-up building of a Wieczorek mine shaft; such conversions are covered in a text on mines in new roles. In Ligota the Municipal Cultural Centre occupies an Art Nouveau villa from 1910.

What to see outside Katowice?

In Chorzów, in the Silesian Park, the Silesian Planetarium is the largest and oldest planetarium in Poland, opened in 1955; since 2022 it also has interactive exhibitions on astronomy, seismology and meteorology.

In Dąbrowa Górnicza stands the Basin Palace of Culture, a socialist-realist building from 1951-1958 with a theatre hall, an art-house cinema and a gallery. In Sosnowiec the People's House is a wooden miners' house in the Zakopane style from 1902-1903, and in Ruda Śląska Stacja Biblioteka works in the historic Ruda Chebzie railway station, where trains still stop.

In Bielsko-Biała the Książnica Beskidzka occupies a modernist building from 1973, and in Jaworzno the municipal library has been housed since 2007 in a building on the market square with a gallery and a cafe. In Cieszyn the Książnica Cieszyńska occupies a townhouse known as the mint, with an exhibition gallery and the Szersznik collections.

Where to shelter from the weather?

Most of these places are indoors, so they work well on a rainy day. Library reading rooms and galleries suit a solo afternoon, and families will like the planetarium. Other ideas for a quieter trip are in the categories Museums and Theatres and opera.
